Michael P. Ryan is of Counsel to Jaspan Schlesinger LLP in their Trusts and Estates Department and his practice focuses on litigation and mediation.  He was the Chief Clerk‑Referee of the Nassau County Surrogate's Court and prior to his tenure as Chief Clerk, he was a Court Attorney‑Referee in the Surrogate's Law Department. 

 

Michael has been an Adjunct Professor of Law for over twenty years at New York Law School. He alternates teaching courses in Trusts and Estate Litigation, and Basic Concepts of Federal Gift and Estate Taxation.  Among his many publications, he has published an article for the New York State Bar Association titled, “Post Mortem Estate Planning Using Qualified Disclaimers.” He has been a contributing editor for the LexisNexis Corporation. His responsibilities there included review and updating of several Matthew Bender publications, such as Warren's Heaton on Surrogate's Court Practice, New York Civil Practice, Bender's Forms for the Civil Practice, and Practical Solutions for New York Lawyers.  LexisNexis published his article in Warren's Heaton Legislative Digest titled “Virtual Representation, A Primer.”

 

Michael was admitted to practice in 1980 in New York and in the United States District Courts for the S.D.N.Y and E.D.N.Y.  Mr. Ryan received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law. He is a recipient of the New York Military Commendation Medal as a JAGC officer commanding, coordinating, and supervising the volunteer legal and family assistance programs for the troops of the New York Army National Guard during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

 

On a personal note, he is married to Linda M. Ryan, Esq., retired Assistant Dean and Research Professor at St. John's University Law School, and the father of two wonderful sons. His hobbies include American classical music (i.e., Jazz), European classical music, tennis, history, literature, opera, boxing, ornithology, and Notre Dame football.

 

Finally, Michael P. Ryan is inordinately proud of having been born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.
